Elephant for the elitists

Posted : 1 month, 2 weeks ago on 27 June 2017 07:48 (A review of 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance)

(In English)
71 Fragments is one of the rarest movies I've seen in a long time and I think it's fantastic.
The overall plot is well constructed, giving us clues about how everyone reached that point and pushing into the lives of these people. Here is a case where Haneke wants to capture a realistic environment that can combine messages that can vary on how one moment can change a person's life either by building some scenes (say a child playing near the tracks of a subway train that wants to pass is stopped by the same train) or the plot itself (the child who goes to the police to be later adopted by one of the couples that appeared before in the film). Or even when we can have a bad time; In other places and in other circumstances, more catastrophes and more problems happen either showed by the characters or recorded by the news (wars, armed conflicts, a case where they claimed that Michael Jackson abused minors). And so I could go on. It is a study film, to be able to interpret the events and understanding in their limitations to these people, however mundane all their occurrences: to discuss with your wife, to play ping pong, to adopt a girl, to ask for alms, etc. All shown with a cold but well composed photograph, with almost zero presence of a soundtrack of some kind in validity of the naturalness of its scenes, and with a rather subtle and focused direction in its purpose.
Of course, everything I put together before combines for both good and bad in the film. As much as I can praise realism, I can't say that it completely excuses the basics that become everything else. We hardly know anything about these characters: Everyone has a simple characterization that is validated more by a good performance, but not by a more solid writing; their problems are simplistic without much to say and neither is that they have a satisfactory resolution; and to make it worse they are between cut so a scene where they could have developed even more a character, it's interrupted in pro to his message. As much as the fact of treating the massacre and subsequent disaster in the end to leave it as a moment in life, I can't stop thinking that the end feels empty without a catharsis for everything shown. In other words, Haneke sacrifices the narrative based on a point. Add that it has a very slow development and that it can get tired of his treatment in the mundane.
To conclude: however much his subjects do not justify the quality of their characters, I can say that the rest of the film is an analysis for anyone who wants to get into the middle. I loved, despite its shortcomings.

Another nail in the genre

Posted : 3 months, 4 weeks ago on 20 April 2017 02:55 (A review of Warcraft)

Warcraft is terrible in almost every sense of the word. Generic, boring, uninspired, there is much to throw.
Something that moderately did well was the soundtrack, staying in the competent and making the experience less carcinogenic than it already is. And that's all good.
The film gets too caught up in a generic conflict of good and evil, and introduces us to its universe to create sequels, but even they do it wrong. And all because:
1. The montage sucks and makes abrupt cuts in moments that could have developed a scene well.
2. It is very generic to even give them points for it, having generic protagonist # 425 to worry about, his family almost as generic, villains who are not so bad but do not have time to develop properly, the one-dimensional villain of Shift, etc.
3. All that "deepening" is thrown into a bland and unimaginative dialogue that only serves to manipulate the audience.
4. It is approved by CinemaWins (accept it, that channel is garbage).
Speaking of the technical section, it is very inconsistent. Leaving aside the design of orcs and certain scenarios, the entire CGI feels quite outdated and many of the planes feel uninspired. The action sucks because we can not see the battles clearly and most don't have a competent directing.
In itself, a waste of time. Only conformists or people with little critical sense could like this shit.

2/10 A total mess

Gus Van Sant will be proud of you, asshole.

Posted : 4 months, 1 week ago on 6 April 2017 11:49 (A review of The Fits)

The Fits is Gerry's most retarded cousin.
Starting with the positive, the cinematography is very good, the directing makes good use of general plans and the music is decent leaving that is repetitive. But after this, everything else sucks.
The characters are re-basic, the story has an idea that does not take off until half of the film and even in that doesn't do much with it, and comes to have "deep" scenes that have little or nothing to say because the film itself does not have nothing to say. It's just seeing a girl dancing with her friends and having a stroke at the end.
The worst part is that this film got a level of overvaluation that I can not understand. Hell, this bullshit got more approval than Swiss Army Man, a movie that if it comes to something, it talks about something, and ends with a message that gives something compared to this garbage.

3/10 Horrible

What is so special about this movie?

Posted : 5 months, 2 weeks ago on 2 March 2017 10:22 (A review of Manchester by the Sea)

Manchester By The Sea is one of the most boring things that i saw this 2016. The directing and cinematography was competent, but the editing was painfully bad. The acting was a hit or miss, particularly with Casey Affleck that speak so little and express so little that i don't know why he has so much acclaim for his performance.
The story is the epitom of lame. Everything about it doesn't explore so much about his characters or doesn't have the impact that deserve it. The crying scene with Cassey Affleck and Michelle Williams is specially bad, because it just came from nowhere and doesn't have the development that this deserve it. The conclusion of all the story is terrible not only because doesn't have the catharsis, is because it make the movie pointless for how the resolution is so simple and so easy that make every relating to nephew, his father or the protagonist himself irrelevant. It's not a bad movie, but it doesn't deserve so much praise.
5/10

The Revenant review

Posted : 1 year, 6 months ago on 19 February 2016 12:00 (A review of The Revenant)

Iñarritu has good ideas, and the perfomance and the cinematography in this movie are in a high level. BUT scenes like Di Caprio watching a tree or a woman floating in the night sky are just pretencious, and the story isn't so special.
